But here at Baraza, we\u2019re just as interested in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">process<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the interviews that shift your thinking and the feedback that challenges your assumptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we asked a few Fellows to share where they are, how they\u2019re navigating the work, and what this experience is teaching them. Here\u2019s what they had to say;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/tuwele.com\/baraza_update\/programs\/fellowships\/uri-ludger\/\"><b>Uri Ledger<\/b><\/a><b> \ud83c\uddf0\ud83c\uddea: Proximity Matters<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Why this story?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrade is the backdrop for a lot of migration in East Africa. I wanted to offer a fresh angle \u2014 one that focuses not just on border policies, but on how people <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">move with purpose<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially around intra-regional trade.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Biggest challenge?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBalancing this story with other responsibilities. It\u2019s a demanding piece, and I want to do it justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What I\u2019m learning about migration:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMigration is intimate. You can&#8217;t sit in Nairobi and tell a story about North American migration and expect it to resonate. It\u2019s about proximity. The closer you are to the lived experience, the more truthful the story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><a href=\"https:\/\/tuwele.com\/baraza_update\/programs\/fellowships\/mabel-echewune\/\">Mabel Echewune<\/a> \ud83c\uddf3\ud83c\uddec<\/b><b>: Behind the Borders of African Travel<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Why this story?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m exploring what drives African travel content creators to focus on intra-African travel, and how African Union policies like the Free Movement Protocol shape that journey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Biggest challenge?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDigging through reports and documents to find the right data. It\u2019s exhausting, but necessary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What I\u2019m learning about migration:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnly five African countries currently offer visa-free access to all other African nations. But regionally, restrictions are more relaxed. It\u2019s uneven, and that tells its own story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/tuwele.com\/baraza_update\/programs\/fellowships\/tonny-mulenzi\/\"><b>Tony Mulenzi<\/b><\/a><b> \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddec: Centering Disability in Migration Policy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Why this story?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cContinental and regional migration policies often leave out Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). I wanted to examine where they fit into Africa\u2019s mobility frameworks, and where the gaps still exist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Biggest challenge?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cReliable data. There&#8217;s so little available on disability and migration. Thankfully, with the mentorship in this Fellowship, I\u2019ve learned how to work through that challenge, scraping, verifying, and visualizing data where possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What I\u2019m learning about migration:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s more than movement. It\u2019s about survival, hope, and the right to opportunity. When we design inclusive systems, we make migration safer and more dignified \u2014 especially for those often left out of the conversation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/tuwele.com\/baraza_update\/programs\/fellowships\/liapeng-raliengoane\/\"><b>Liapeng Raliengoane<\/b><\/a><b> \ud83c\uddf1\ud83c\uddf8: The Silence of Empty Villages<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Why this story?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m writing about rural migration from Quthing, Lesotho, a quiet but massive shift. Villages are emptying out. I want to raise awareness about what we\u2019re losing, and what kinds of policies might change that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Biggest challenge?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAccess. Many Basotho migrants live and work in South Africa, often under intense schedules. Some were reluctant to share their experiences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What I\u2019m learning about migration:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just movement, it\u2019s about survival and sacrifice. For many Basotho, migration is the only available path out of poverty. That reality deserves more attention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Work Is Still Unfolding<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we move toward the final days of the third cycle of the Data Storytelling Fellowship, each story continues to take shape guided by data and told from a place of personal connection. The process hasn\u2019t been easy. But it has been transformative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll be back soon with more updates.
