So much has been said about the protests led by young people in the country, a movement that is achieving things some of us have dreamt for years. Not only was the Finance Bill 2024 dropped, but there\u2019s been a bigger call for accountable leadership and an end to political impunity and arrogance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve celebrated all the small and big acts of resistance that have emerged over the past few weeks \u2013 including the beautiful chaos of Friday 5th July when Kenyans held several parallel Twitter* spaces at the same time that State House was doing the same (One of those parallel spaces was titled \u201cVibes and Inshallah: Open Mic: Maandamano Chronicles\u201d, another one was hilariously titled \u201cWhat the hell is going on\u201d.)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another example is what I\u2019ve been calling #socialjail: deplatforming and denying politicians our attention and the social status they so crave. Now, many of them are not being allowed to speak at funerals and other social gatherings, the sirens of the fuel-guzzling SUVs that drive us off the road have gone noticeably quiet. At the time I\u2019m writing this, thousands of people are gathered at a memorial concert in Uhuru Park, Nairobi\u2019s best-known public park and ground zero for so many important moments in this country\u2019s history.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t quite chronicle everything that has been inspiring, impressive and infuriating about the past few weeks, otherwise this newsletter would be too long to read. Suffice it to say, that we\u2019re living in the prophetic words of Langston Hughes in his short but powerful poem, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/46548\/harlem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harlem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (for today, replace with \u201cKenya\u201d):<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens to a dream deferred?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Does it dry up<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0like a raisin in the sun?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Or fester like a sore\u2014<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And then run?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Does it stink like rotten meat?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Or crust and sugar over\u2014<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0like a syrupy sweet?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Maybe it just sags<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0like a heavy load.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or does it explode?<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has always struck me that in the original rendering of this poem, the last line is always in italics.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, here&#8217;s:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>What I\u2019m Reading:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobin.com\/2024\/03\/imf-kenya-austerity-debt-william-ruto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IMF\u2019s Policies are Destroying Kenya, Again<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published in Jacobin Magazine.
