{"id":18062,"date":"2020-07-12T04:41:34","date_gmt":"2020-07-12T04:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/barazalab.com\/?p=18062"},"modified":"2023-09-04T05:38:36","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T05:38:36","slug":"saba-saba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tuwele.com\/baraza_update\/saba-saba\/","title":{"rendered":"Saba Saba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Greetings, friends:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week marked the 30th anniversary of the Kenyan pro-democracy demonstrations we colloquially call Saba Saba (7th July). If you were born on that day in 1990, 68% of Kenyans today are younger than you! Hard to believe, but age 30 in Kenya is actually on the older side of life \u2013 demographically speaking. And if you were 30 years old on the day of that first Saba Saba demonstration in 1990, 95% of Kenyans today are younger than you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about that \u2013 going by data on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.population.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">population.io<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a website and dashboard I typically waste a lot of time on) nearly half of the Kenyan population today was born after the year 2000. Half! I was thinking about this when I read and watched much of the media content commemorating that day. Mwangi Githahu <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-star.co.ke\/sasa\/lifestyle\/2020-07-10-reforms-driven-by-saba-saba-never-really-took-root\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in The Star reminds us the Kanu government claimed the protests were the work of \u201cdrug addicts\u201d, but that the uprising \u201cwas brought about by poverty, injustice, disregard for human rights and a lack of free public participation in national affairs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kwamchetsi Makokha <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theelephant.info\/features\/2020\/07\/07\/saba-saba-and-the-evolution-of-citizen-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in The Elephant emphasizes the unfinished nature of the revolution, and that many of the people who were at the forefront of the movement \u201chave died or have been accommodated by the rapacious state.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This past Tuesday, groups of grassroots organizers based at social justice centres Mathare, Kayole, Dandora, Kibera and other meeting places were stopped even before they left their neighbourhoods. They were demanding an end to police killings; the right to live without fear in safe communities. But many of them were unable to even begin their demonstration \u2013 as early as 7.30am, police officers had already begun blocking their passage and arresting whomever they thought was an organizer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The demands thirty years ago were grand in the geopolitical sense \u2013 Charles Onyango-Obbo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nation.co.ke\/kenya\/blogs-opinion\/opinion\/saba-saba-day-kenyan-story-african-moment-1447374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in his latest column<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the Daily Nation situates the original Saba Saba protests in broader shifts and movements that were destabilizing the old order of things \u2013 Nelson Mandela had been released from prison earlier that year, the Berlin Wall had come down the year before, other African countries like Benin and Zambia had shown that an end to old independence parties and military governments was possible in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What struck me this week is captured by journalist April Zhu\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aprzhu\/status\/1280527181609938945?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as she followed the protests on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe cruelty of today\u2019s violent police response manifests in the sheer minimality of demonstrators\u2019 demands. They said, \u2018Stop killing us. We have the right to live.\u2019 And the state literally said, \u2018No you don\u2019t.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems that the shrinking of demands and the suppression of the possibility to even express the demand \u2013 even if the problems remain the same and the revolution unfinished \u2013 is the legacy of the past thirty years, and is the reality of life for the majority of Kenyans alive today. What does that mean for media expression in this moment?
