{"id":18059,"date":"2020-07-26T05:30:59","date_gmt":"2020-07-26T05:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/barazalab.com\/?p=18059"},"modified":"2023-09-04T05:38:35","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T05:38:35","slug":"stress-testing-journalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tuwele.com\/baraza_update\/stress-testing-journalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Stress Testing Journalism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Greetings, friends:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my favourite websites on the Internet today is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionaryofobscuresorrows.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a compendium of invented words written by John Koenig, that aims to fill holes in the language \u2014 to give a name to emotions we all feel but don&#8217;t have a word for. I spend way too much time on this site \u2013 first of all it is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dictionary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and I\u2019m a nerd like that; and second, bringing clarity to nebulous concepts is what I have always desired my writing to do. More on this in a little while.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Africa Partnership For Justice held a tweetchat this week (under the hashtag <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23ChangedAfrica&amp;src=typeahead_click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#ChangedAfrica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) convening a panel of leading journalists, creatives, and thinkers to explore how 2020 and Covid-19 have disrupted Africa. I was following along and the conversation was rich and insightful: Aidan Eyakuze, director of Twaweza in Tanzania, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aeyakuze\/status\/1286270036777357315?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoke of <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how authoritarian governments are using the pandemic as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aeyakuze\/status\/1286274151771189248?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heaven-sent <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Aidan\u2019s delightful use of the pun) opportunity to roll back civic freedoms, which are themselves fledgling and imperfect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBC presenter Alan Kasujja spoke on how the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kasujja\/status\/1286283092131549186?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic has been <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a stress test for journalism all over Africa. \u201cJournalism has been in a fight for its life,\u201d he said, yet the recent round of layoffs and retrenchments in media organizations means that a lot of important news is going unreported. Africa Uncensored\u2019s John-Allan Namu <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnallannamu\/status\/1286280950658334721?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">puts it thus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cNews reporting will struggle from this gap in institutional memory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it was Judy Sikuza, CEO of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, whose<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/judysikuza\/status\/1286277393762725895?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit hardest: \u201cCovid-19 destroyed the illusion of the rate of progress. Too many of our people in Africa still live in poor, fragile, unequal and dehumanising conditions. Our change efforts must be approached with more urgency and ethical leadership.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, there were some upbeat perspectives, mostly centred around the way the pandemic has opened up opportunities in the digital space. Diana Mpyisi<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/curiousrwandan\/status\/1286279903986495488?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlighted <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how Rwanda has used high-tech robots to help essential workers, as well as using drones to spread Covid-19 awareness messages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re living through a crisis in real time, so it\u2019s not easy to foresee what all the implications of the current moment are likely to be. However, as I listened to the panel, I remembered a term I had stumbled across in the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionaryofobscuresorrows.com\/post\/38066056235\/kuebiko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kuebiko<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a state of exhaustion inspired by acts of senseless violence [or a pandemic]*, which force you to revise your image of what can happen in this world\u2014mending the fences of your expectations, weeding out all unwelcome and invasive truths, cultivating the perennial good that\u2019s buried under the surface, and propping yourself up like an old scarecrow, who\u2019s bursting at the seams but powerless to do anything but stand there and watch.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*my addition<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That made-up word captured precisely the emotion I\u2019ve been struggling with, one that emerged as I followed the tweetchat and it continued to dawn on me that we are in some serious deep trouble \u2013 the media, this country, the world, existentially.
